FAQ Schema

FAQ schema gives AI models ready-made answers to quote.

Instead of inferring an answer from your page, a model can lift a clean question-answer pair directly. That is why FAQPage schema is one of the most actionable steps in GEO.

Short answer

FAQ schema (FAQPage structured data) marks up your question-and-answer content so AI models and search engines can extract clean Q-A pairs directly from your page. A model responding to a buyer's question is more likely to cite your page if it finds a well-written, structured answer rather than prose it has to interpret. For local and service businesses, this is one of the fastest wins in generative engine optimization. See the full ChatGPT recommendation playbook for where it fits in the broader picture.

Why FAQ schema works

AI models want the answer pre-assembled. Give it to them.

When an AI assistant formulates a response, it is essentially doing a quick retrieval and synthesis task. It finds sources, extracts relevant passages, and composes an answer. The easier you make the extraction step, the more likely your content ends up in the answer.

An FAQ with proper FAQPage schema turns each question-answer pair into a discrete, labeled data object the model can identify and lift cleanly. Compare this to burying the same information in the third paragraph of a dense service description, where the model has to parse what is question and what is answer and whether this paragraph actually addresses the buyer's query. The FAQ wins on all three counts.

This matters beyond just ChatGPT. Google's AI Overviews draw on structured content, and FAQPage schema has been a named factor in rich result eligibility for years. Perplexity's citation behavior rewards content that is organized, direct and answer-shaped. A well-built FAQ section is useful to three major platforms at once — and to the real people who land on your page directly.

Writing good FAQ content

The questions matter as much as the schema.

Schema without good content does nothing. The value is in the quality of the question-answer pairs, not in the presence of the tags. These are the principles that make FAQ content citable.

01

Write the questions buyers actually ask — not the ones you wish they asked.

"What are your hours?" is a question. "Is AI automation right for my business?" is a question. "How does your proprietary approach redefine the customer experience?" is marketing copy. Use the real language buyers use when they are confused, comparison-shopping, or trying to make a decision. If you do not know what those questions are, read your sales conversation transcripts, your emails from leads, and your Google Q&A.

02

Give a direct answer in the first sentence.

Every FAQ answer should open with the direct response to the question, not a preamble. "Yes, we serve Mississauga and all of the western GTA." "Our standard engagement starts at $1,500." "An AI receptionist can handle inbound calls, answer FAQs, qualify leads and schedule appointments." A model looking for a quotable answer will find it in your opening sentence, not in your second paragraph.

03

Keep answers between 40 and 100 words.

Too short and the answer is too thin to be useful or citable. Too long and it stops reading like a concise answer and starts reading like an article — which defeats the FAQ format. Aim for the length that fully answers the question and stops. Most well-formed FAQ answers land between 50 and 90 words.

04

Use service- and location-specific language naturally.

A FAQ on your dental clinic page that mentions "cosmetic dentistry in Scarborough" or "dental implants for Scarborough residents" is embedding the local context that AI models need to connect you to location-based queries. Do not stuff keywords — write the city and service the same way a real customer would say them.

05

Put FAQ sections on service pages, not just the homepage.

Buyers search for specific services, not just business names. A FAQ on your AI receptionist service page — answering questions about AI receptionist cost, setup time, and call handling — gets retrieved when a buyer asks ChatGPT about AI receptionist options in Toronto. The homepage FAQ handles brand-level questions. Service page FAQs handle the queries closest to purchase intent.

Implementation

How to add FAQPage schema correctly.

The markup is simple. The questions and answers are the hard part — but once written, implementation is straightforward.

The code structure

JSON-LD in the page head.

Add a script block with type 'application/ld+json' to your page head. The FAQPage schema wraps a mainEntity array where each item is a Question with a name (the question text) and an acceptedAnswer with a text property (the answer). Every question-answer pair visible on the page should appear in the schema, and every schema pair should be visible on the page. Hidden schema is a guidelines violation. See the broader picture in structured data for generative AI.

Where to place it

Every service page. Prioritize high-intent pages first.

Start with the pages that map to your highest-intent queries — your core service pages, your location pages, your pricing page if you have one. Add three to six question-answer pairs per page. Avoid generic questions that could apply to any business ("Do you offer good service?") in favour of specific, real questions about your particular offering. Connect to your overall GEO strategy so the FAQ content aligns with the queries you most want to own.

Quality check

Validate and review before publishing.

Run your schema through Google's Rich Results Test to catch syntax errors and ensure your FAQ is eligible for rich results. Read the visible FAQ text on your page as a buyer would — does each answer actually answer the question, or does it deflect into marketing language? Bad FAQ content with good schema is still bad. The schema tells the model where to look; the content determines whether the model quotes you or skips you. Check how reviews and other signals complement your schema work.

Answered

Questions, answered.

What is FAQ schema and how does it help AI?

FAQ schema (FAQPage structured data) labels your question-and-answer content in a machine-readable format. AI models can extract the Q-A pairs directly rather than inferring answers from prose. This makes your content easier to cite in conversational answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews.

How many FAQ questions should I add per page?

Three to six is a practical target for most service pages. Enough to cover the real questions buyers ask before making a decision in your category — not so many that the FAQ becomes a filler exercise. Quality over quantity: three genuinely useful answers outperform ten generic ones.

Does FAQ schema still work after Google changed rich result display?

Google reduced FAQPage rich results display in search pages for many sites, but the schema still provides underlying structured data that AI models and crawlers read. The shift affects visual presentation in classic search, not the machine-readability that AI platforms rely on. The GEO value of FAQ schema is intact.

Should FAQ schema appear on every page of my site?

Not necessarily every page — but every page that maps to a real buyer question benefits from it. Start with core service pages and location pages, where buyer intent is highest and the FAQ content is most specific. Skip pages like your About page, where questions and answers would be generic.

What makes a FAQ answer bad for AI citations?

Answers that open with a preamble instead of the direct answer, answers that are vague or jargon-heavy, answers that are too long to be read as a discrete response, and answers that are not actually visible on the page. AI models want the clearest, most direct answer available — if yours is buried or indirect, another source will be cited instead.
