AI Overviews vs featured snippets — what actually changed.

They both sit above the search results. They both answer the question before anyone clicks. But how Google assembles them, and what you do to appear in them, are quite different.

Short answer

A featured snippet pulls a passage from one page and displays it in a box at the top of results. An AI Overview synthesizes multiple sources into a freshly written paragraph — no single source is quoted verbatim, and attribution is distributed across several links. Getting into a featured snippet meant having the best single passage for a query. Getting into an AI Overview means being among the trusted sources a model draws from when it constructs its answer. The optimization logic overlaps but the strategy is broader. GEO covers the full approach.

The key difference

One passage versus a synthesized answer.

The surface appearance is similar enough that many businesses assume the same tactic — write a great snippet — still works. It partially does. But the mechanism underneath has changed.

A featured snippet was a direct lift. Google found the page that best answered a query in a single passage, boxed it, and displayed it with a link. Your job was to write one excellent passage — ideally the first 40-60 words of a section — that matched the query precisely. The optimization was predictable: clean formatting, direct answer first, one clear paragraph.

An AI Overview does not copy anyone. It reads multiple sources, synthesizes a written answer in its own language, then cites two to five sources in the attribution links below. No single source is the snippet. Instead, the model forms a view from a blend of sources it considers credible and accurate, then presents that view as its own explanation. This changes everything about what "winning" means. Being the only excellent source no longer guarantees inclusion — and being present across multiple corroborating sources is now an asset rather than a nice-to-have.

How each works

The mechanics side by side.

Understanding the mechanism behind each format helps you stop treating them as the same optimization target.

Featured Snippets

Single best passage, directly displayed.

Google identifies the page that answers a query most directly and concisely. It lifts a passage — typically a paragraph, list or table — and displays it with the page title and URL. Ranking on page one is usually a prerequisite. The page that wins the snippet typically has a header phrasing the question and an immediate direct answer below it. Position zero was the goal.

AI Overviews

Synthesized answer from a trusted source pool.

Google's AI Overview reads multiple results from its index, synthesizes a written answer using its language model, then cites several sources in attribution links below the overview. The cited sources do not need to rank first. They need to be trusted by the model — credible, consistent, answer-shaped content with clear entity signals. Being in the mix of trusted sources is the new target. See TRIVOX's GEO guide for how to get there.

The Overlap

Answer-first content still matters for both.

Writing direct, well-structured, question-answering content improves your chances in both formats. Where they diverge: snippets reward the single best passage; AI Overviews reward consistent, credible content that corroborates what the model already believes from other sources. Entity clarity and off-site consistency matter far more for Overviews than they ever did for snippets.

What this means for your strategy

The snippet playbook is necessary but no longer sufficient.

Everything you did to win featured snippets is still worth doing. But stopping there leaves AI Overview inclusion to chance.

Featured snippet optimization — direct answers, clear headings, concise paragraphs — feeds directly into AI Overview eligibility. A page with weak structure and buried answers will not appear in either. So the foundation is the same. What changes is the additional layer: entity data, schema, off-site corroboration and the consistency of your business facts across the web. These were largely irrelevant to snippet optimization. For AI Overviews they are primary signals.

There is also a practical change in what inclusion looks like. With snippets, you could measure position zero and track it explicitly. With AI Overviews, your name might appear in an attribution link below an answer that synthesizes your content without quoting it. The win is subtler and harder to track — but no less real. Businesses included in AI Overviews for category queries in their city see consistent organic discovery without having to rank first for every variation of the query.

What each format delivers

Honest comparison of what inclusion means.

The business value of appearing in each format differs, and understanding the difference helps prioritize where to invest.

Featured snippet: visible, direct, one-source

Your content sits at the top of results for that query. Traffic benefit is direct and attributable. Competitors can displace you by writing a better single passage. High-value, but fragile.

AI Overview: distributed, synthesized, multi-source

Your content contributes to an answer that users read before scrolling. You may appear as one of several attribution links. Less dramatic than a solo snippet but more stable — a model that trusts your entity will draw on you across many queries, not just one.

Both together: the strongest position

A business with excellent answer content and strong entity signals can appear in both formats. The same structural discipline that wins snippets feeds Overview eligibility. There is no reason to choose between them.

Answered

Questions, answered.

What is the difference between AI Overviews and featured snippets?

A featured snippet lifts one passage from one page and displays it verbatim. An AI Overview synthesizes multiple sources into a freshly written answer and cites several sources in attribution links. Featured snippets have one winner per query; AI Overviews include a pool of contributing sources. The optimization for each overlaps but is not identical.

Do I need to rank on page one to appear in AI Overviews?

Not necessarily. AI Overviews pull from a broader set of sources than the top-ten organic results. Entity trust, content quality and corroboration across sources can contribute to inclusion even without a top-ranking page. That said, being indexable and crawlable is a prerequisite, and stronger page authority never hurts.

Can optimizing for featured snippets also help with AI Overviews?

Yes. The core discipline is the same: write direct, well-structured, question-answering content with clear headings. What AI Overviews add is sensitivity to entity signals — consistent schema, accurate Google Business Profile, off-site mentions — that snippets largely ignore. Do both.

Are featured snippets going away because of AI Overviews?

Not entirely. Google still shows featured snippets for many queries, particularly where a single clean passage answers the question better than a synthesized overview would. For informational queries about products, processes or definitions, AI Overviews have taken over much of the position-zero real estate, but snippets remain for certain query types.

How do I get my business into AI Overviews?

Write answer-shaped content with clear headings and direct answers. Add Organization and FAQ schema. Keep your entity data consistent across your site, GBP and key directories. Earn references from credible external sources in your category. These are the signals that move a business from absent to included in Google's AI synthesized answers.
