GBP Verification

How to verify your Google Business Profile — and what to do when it doesn't go smoothly.

An unverified listing ranks poorly and can be claimed by someone else. Here are all the routes Google offers and how to handle each one.

Short answer

Verifying your Google Business Profile confirms that you manage the business at the stated address. Verification methods include video, phone, postcard by mail, email, and instant verification for certain Google Search Console accounts. The method offered depends on the business type, location, and account history. Until you're verified, your listing may not appear in local search results and you can't fully manage your profile.

Why it matters

What verification actually unlocks.

Verification is not just administrative — it has a direct effect on ranking and management control.

An unverified GBP listing can still appear in Google Maps, but it gets weaker treatment in local ranking and you can't control what it shows. Anyone with a Google account can suggest edits to an unverified listing — including competitors. Until you verify, you also can't add or remove photos, respond to reviews, update hours, or post updates. All of those management actions feed ranking signals.

From an AI visibility perspective, an unverified or partially managed listing sends weaker entity signals. The completeness gap — missing categories, no description, outdated hours — means the model has less to work with when deciding whether to name your business. Verification is the prerequisite for everything else. Once verified, the profile becomes fully manageable and the optimization work can actually take effect.

Verification methods

Every route Google currently offers.

Google presents different options depending on business type, account age, and location. You don't get to choose freely — the options shown are what's available for your account.

01

Video verification (most common now)

Google increasingly routes new listings through video verification. You record a continuous video showing the approach to your business, your signage, your interior with operational equipment, and your street address. The video must be a single uncut recording — no editing. It's reviewed by a Google team member, not automated, and typically takes a few days to a few weeks. The most important detail: the business must be clearly physically operational, not a vacant space.

02

Postcard by mail

Google mails a postcard to the listed address with a five-digit verification code. The postcard usually arrives within five to fourteen days in Canada, though delays happen. Enter the code in your GBP dashboard before the code expires — typically 30 days. This method confirms you can receive mail at the stated address, so a virtual office or mailbox service that won't pass the code to you won't work.

03

Phone or SMS verification

Some listings are offered phone verification, where Google calls or texts a code to the phone number on the listing. This option is more common for businesses that already have a track record with Google — existing verified accounts in good standing, or listings with an established history. The code expires quickly, so have someone at the business ready to answer.

04

Email verification

Available for some business types, Google sends a verification code to the business email on the account. Less common but straightforward when offered. Ensure you have access to the email address attached to your GBP account before requesting this method.

05

Instant verification via Search Console

If your website is verified in Google Search Console under the same Google account, some listings are eligible for instant GBP verification. It's not guaranteed — Google applies it selectively — but it's worth checking when you set up the listing. Go to the GBP verification step and look for an instant option before requesting a postcard or video.

When it fails

Troubleshooting verification that gets stuck.

Some verifications stall — the postcard never arrives, the video is rejected, or the account gets flagged. Here's how to navigate each scenario.

If a postcard doesn't arrive within three weeks, request a new one from the GBP dashboard. Postcards occasionally get lost. If the second one also fails, check that the address on the listing is formatted exactly as it appears in Canada Post's addressing system — suite numbers, unit designations, and directionals (NW, SE) need to match precisely. A formatting mismatch can cause mail to be undeliverable even to a real address.

If a video verification is rejected, the most common reason is that the recording didn't clearly show the business exterior, signage, and operational interior in a single continuous take. Re-read Google's video requirements before recording again: the signage must be visible and match the business name on the listing, the interior must show the space being used for the stated business type, and the video must begin from outside and show you walking in. Filming in poor lighting or a cluttered, obviously unoccupied space results in rejection.

If your account is flagged during verification and you can't proceed, this often indicates that Google sees a policy issue with the listing — an address that doesn't qualify, a name that includes keywords, or a suspected duplicate. Before attempting verification again, audit the listing against GBP policies. A suspension can follow a failed verification attempt if the underlying issue isn't resolved first. When you're stuck despite a legitimate business, the Google Business Profile Help Community is the most reliable escalation path — post your situation with your listing details for guidance from Product Experts.

Answered

Questions, answered.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

It depends on the method. Phone verification is immediate. Email verification takes minutes. Postcard verification takes five to fourteen business days in Canada, sometimes longer. Video verification is reviewed by a human at Google and typically takes a few days to two weeks. Instant verification via Search Console is immediate when available.

What if my GBP postcard never arrives?

Wait at least three weeks, then request a new postcard from your GBP dashboard. If the second one also fails to arrive, check that your address is formatted exactly as Canada Post would address it — unit number placement, directionals, and postal code all matter. A persistent failure usually points to an address formatting mismatch rather than a mail delivery problem.

Why is Google asking for video verification?

Google increasingly uses video verification to confirm that a business is physically real and operational at the stated address. It's harder to fake than a postcard intercept and catches the most common type of spam listing — a virtual or non-existent storefront. If you operate a real business at the address, the video process is straightforward: show the exterior, signage, and an operational interior in one continuous recording.

Can I verify a service-area business that doesn't serve customers at its address?

Yes. Service-area businesses — plumbers, mobile services, home-based tradespeople — can verify a home or depot address and then hide that address from the public listing, showing only their service area. The address is still used to determine local ranking in the served area; it just isn't displayed to customers.

Does an unverified GBP listing affect AI search visibility?

Yes. An unverified listing is incomplete by definition — limited management access means categories, hours, descriptions, and photos may be missing or wrong. AI assistants use the entity data in a GBP as a primary signal. A thin, unverified profile gives models less to work with and makes you less likely to appear in AI-generated recommendations.
